With turbines in the 15 to 20 MW class, that is six to eight hundred new foundations a year, every year, for a quarter of a century. The foundations are no rounding error either: <a href="https://docs.nrel.gov/docs/fy24osti/88335.pdf">NREL&rsquo;s cost reviews</a> put the substructure at about 13 percent of a fixed-bottom project&rsquo;s capital cost, and closer to a third for floating.</p> <p>Here is how a foundation still gets designed. A customer arrives with a site, a load case and a deadline. A specialist opens a standard, interprets it, models the structure, runs the analysis, and delivers a correct, defensible design that is almost entirely bespoke. That is Engineer-to-Order, and it has built most of the infrastructure around you: engineering sold one project at a time, each one a small act of heroism.</p>
